21-23 March 2008: The Easter Long weekend saw Round 1 of the ARB Pinjarra Engineering Hyden 400 run in Western Australia. The Off Road Rush Team entered 2 Pro Class Buggies in the event with an excellent result, Director Of Off Road Rush Chris Western’s round up of the event is below:
“What a great Event, extremely well organized and a quality field of 62 cars. On Friday we conducted hot laps in 3 Off Road Rush Pro Class Buggies” said Chris. “ We took land owners, Event volunteers and Prize Winners, it was awesome and everyone loved it”
“Saturday was Prologue and Mike Taylor and I were ready to go out in Off Road Rush Car 61 when the coil in the engine decided to pack it in. Mike and I quickly changed the coil and out we went. I was very happy qualifying 15t”. Matt Western in Off Road Rush Car 62 qualified in 17th position with only one second separating Chris and Matt.
Saturday afternoon it started to rain heavily and Chris and Matt were rubbing their hands together as the rain is a good equalizer plus they had the perfect tyre choice in the Good Year MTR Wranglers.
At the start of Section 1 the engine in Car 61 started mis firing off the start line,”I couldn’t believe it” said Chris “We operate Drive Days in rain all the time and this never happens” They pulled over and their was water in an electrical plug which put them 12 minutes behind once they fixed it and got going again.
Matt Western in Car 62 was relishing in the wet conditions coming into Hyden in 9th Outright with Chris along way behind in 35th Outright. On the return to Smithy’s Place Chris had a good run and Matt got tangled up in a fence dropping 6 minutes.
On Sunday Section 2 only 6 seconds separated Matt and Chris after the 1st lap then Chris had a power steering line come loose so they went back into the pits to repair it. Matt had a great run to finish in 11th position and Chris coming from 35th to 24th after passing the same cars twice!
Section 3 on Sunday saw a trouble free run for both Chris and Matt, Chris up to 7th outright and Matt 8th outright with only 50 seconds separating them. “I reckon I did up to 30 passes in the event and honestly it was some of the best fun I have ever had” laughed Chris. Final results for the event for the Off Road Rush Team was Matt Western and Dieter Allan in Car 62 in 6th Outright Position and Chris Western and Mike Taylor in Car 61 in 11th Outright.
The Off Road Rush Pro Class Cars of 61 and 62 were the first 2 non American Built Race Cars to finish the event.
Congratulations to Shannon and Ian Rentsch in 1st outright, Brad Prout in 2nd Outright and Hayden Bentley and Ben Chivell in 3rd Outright
“Again, it was just an awesome event, many thanks to the sponsors, officials and other competitors for a great weekend, we will be back in 2009 for sure” said Chris.
Congratulations to all the other competitors and Off Road Rush would like to thanks their sponsors Good Year, Haltech and Racer Imports. We look forward to our next Event which is the Donald 500 which is Round 2 of the AORC.
